The 'Taos Hum' is a low-pitched sound heard in numerous places worldwide, especially in the USA, UK, and northern europe. It is usually heard only in quiet environments, and is often described as sounding like a distant diesel engine. Since it has proven indetectable by microphones or VLF antennae, its source and nature is still a mystery.Taos Hum Page

What can animals teach us about staying healthy? A great deal, argues Cindy Engel. Animals, she says, are constantly self-medicating, eating anything from charcoal to leaves to ward off illness and to treat sickness. An animal behaviourist at the Open University, Engel came upon the new science of animal health while searching for a cure for her own illness. Now she has brought together all the knowledge of the field in a book. She tells Maggie McDonald a few secrets from the animal world--such as what leads sheep in the Shetlands to bite the heads off live Arctic tern chicks [more]
archaeology: Potter's Field Burian Caves Excavated (in Jerusalem's Kidron Valley)Bridges For Peace Extensive burial caves discovered in Jerusalem's Kidron Valley served as the last resting place of Jews at the end of the Second Temple era. Subsequently they were used by pagan Roman soldiers and finally by Christian Byzantine monks. They were sealed in the 7th century AD for nearly 1,500 years. The series of burials remarkably took place without disturbing the bones of those previously interred, so that the caves have proved a veritable treasure trove for historians.

MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is the key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM-1) satellite. Terra MODIS is viewing the entire Earth's surface every to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths (see MODIS Technical Specifications). These data, along with data from a second MODIS (which is being developed for the Aqua satellite), will improve our understanding of global dynamics and processes occurring on the land, in the oceans, and in the lower atmosphere. MODIS is playing a vital role in the development of validated, global, interactive Earth system models able to predict global change accurately enough to assist policy makers in making sound decisions concerning the protection of our environment. The circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of Richard II are set to be re-examined in light of research in the Scottish town of Stirling. History has recorded that Richard died whilst incarcerated in Pontefract Castle in 1400, on the orders of his usurper and cousin Henry IV. The body was buried at King's Langley in Hertfordshire, following a clear attempt by Henry to stave off insurrection by publicly displaying Richard's corpse in a parade from Pontefract to Westminster. Despite this account, rumours and documents have placed an individual purporting to be Richard in Stirling Castle, held by the Duke of Albany. The contemporary Scottish writer Walter Bower confirms this account by writing that Richard died in Stirling '..and was buried on the north side of the High Altar of Black Friars'. Archaeologists have now unearthed the remains of Black Friars Church in Stirling, and hope to begin DNA testing on grave deposits from the site. These results will be compared to DNA from the bones of Richard's father, Edward the Black Prince, who is buried at Canterbury Cathedral. Historians are keen to see if Richard's body (pictured here in Froissart's Chronicles being carried from Pontefract to London) will finally reveal the answer to this enduring royal riddle. source: mepl.co.uk

The book was first published in New York by the Spanish Child Welfare Association of America for the American Friends Service Committee in 1938; a reissue in the same year was published without the statement “for the American Friends Service Committee.” The Oxford University Press (New York) republished the work in the following year. Although each issue has a different binding, the contents are identical: an Introduction by Aldous Huxley, an Editor’s Note signed “J.A.W.” and sixty black-and-white reproductions of drawings. Sheela Na Gig's are quasi-erotic stone carvings of a female figure ,usually found on Norman churches. They consist of an old woman squatting and pulling apart her vulva a fairly strange thing to find on a church I think you'll agree when you consider the puritanical attitudes of many Christians. The carvings are very old and often do not seem to be part of the church but have been taken from a previous older building (see the weathering on the Church Stretton Sheela as compared to the surrounding masonry). This may have a connection with fact that many churches are built on previous pagan sites (for instance Kilpeck) and may have been incorporated into the building from an earlier church. Many of the carvings are badly weathered and it is difficult to determine features. This would also seem to indicate an older origin than the host church. The Sheela Na Gig Project

Visualizing huge numbers can be very difficult. People regularly talk about millions of miles, billions of bytes, or trillions of dollars, yet it's still hard to grasp just how much a "billion" really is. The MegaPenny Project aims to help by taking one small everyday item, the U.S. penny, and building on that to answer the question: "What would a billion (or a trillion) pennies look like?" All the following pages have tables at the bottom, listing things such as the value of the pennies, size of the pile, weight, and area (if laid flat). All weights and measurements are U.S. standards, not metric. It's best to step through the project from start to beginning, but if you'd like to just jump in, links are available below. Sometimes you just jump right in and go. That's kind of how we feel about this next trip: Branson, Missouri. You hear conflicting reports about Branson. Some rave, saying it's the country music capital. For others, it's nothing more than cowboy kitsch. Sometimes when you travel you find exactly what you're looking for. So you can imagine which sensibility Cash Peters was after when he went to Branson on one of his infamous Bad Taste Tours. [more]

Almost 2,000 years ago the people of Yodefat - a small city in the Galilean region of what is now Israel - took a brave stand against the powerful Roman army. The rebellion of this poor, agrarian community started a monumental six-year war with the Romans that would change the course of Western civilization. For 47 days the people of Yodefat held off the enemy, but eventually the military strength of the Romans prevailed, and the city was destroyed. Echoes from the Ancients

Traditional museums have collected and studied the shattered remains of ancient cultures for centuries. Now The Museum of Reconstructions (MOR) is advancing the scientific study of art history by reconstructing ruined masterpieces using three-dimensional modeling technology. Developed in collaboration with leading archaeologists, MOR reconstructions incorporate all known information concerning the original state of a site and include dimensionally accurate 3D computer models based on existing publications and physical surveys.
